Making Mauritius a regional teaching center
Mauritius has become the third African country to join the Washington Accord as a provisional member.
This recognition is crucial for transforming Mauritius into a regional hub for engineering education, adhering to the Washington Accord’s standards. It is expected to attract ambitious international students seeking globally recognized degrees and offer local engineers opportunities for global mobility.
Raj Prayag explained to the press that the Washington Accord is one of three key international agreements established by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA). These agreements set the highest standards for professional engineers worldwide. Signatory organizations benefit from the mutual recognition of accredited programs.
Essentially, graduates from accredited programs in one signatory country are recognized by other signatories as meeting the academic requirements for professional engineering. All signatories commit to ensuring that their accrediting bodies recognized programs accredited by other signatories. The Washington Accord currently has 25 signatory countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, and China.
