Unleashing economic prospects in the region
On April 15 and 16, 2024, at the Hennessy Hotel in Ebène, the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) took center stage in a pivotal event organized by the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Economic stakeholders from the Region convened to explore the potentials and hurdles of intra-COMESA trade, graced by esteemed personalities, including the Secretary-General of COMESA and representatives from prominent organizations.
During the event, the MCCI leveraged its expertise as a COMESA Business Council founding member. The Secretary-General of the MCCI underscored the opportunities and challenges inherent in intra-COMESA trade, shedding light on the Region’s latent economic prospects. He emphasized the indispensable role of the private sector in driving regional value chains forward.
Despite notable strides in Mauritius-COMESA trade relations, persistent barriers such as tariff regulations and elevated transportation costs impede progress. To surmount these obstacles, the MCCI advocates promoting trade, engaging the private sector, harnessing technology, nurturing human capital, and enhancing infrastructure.
As the voice of the Mauritian private sector, the MCCI offers a suite of services tailored to streamline operations and bolster trade and investment expansion within COMESA. Serving as a conduit for Mauritian enterprises seeking to venture into the COMESA market, it fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange to capitalize on regional trade prospects.
