Empowering women in Mauritius : Sewing machine donations

400 Sewing machines distributed nationwide

On Wednesday, May 29, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth participated in the distribution of sewing machines to women in the Moka District Council.

This initiative, led by the Smile Train Association, aims to empower women through entrepreneurship training. A total of 84 women received their sewing machines in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science, and Technology Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs, and Cooperatives Naveena Ramyead, and MP Yogida Sawmynaden.

Other notable attendees included Smile Train Association Vice President Robert Yip Tong and the association’s ambassador, Lady Sarojini Jugnauth. The distribution of sewing machines began on February 14, and approximately 400 machines have been distributed across various regions of the country so far. According to Lady Jugnauth, these sewing machines will provide women with the opportunity to engage in productive activities while staying at home. She also encouraged aspiring women entrepreneurs to register to take advantage of additional resources and support.
