54 Years of Diplomatic and Economic Relations
Economic cooperation between China and Mauritius was highlighted during the Spring Festival at the Trianon Convention Centre.
The Chinese Embassy commemorated 54 years of strong diplomatic relations between the two countries and emphasized the major role of the economy in this partnership. In a global context marked by uncertainty, China has strengthened the stability of its economy, with GDP growth projected at 5% by 2025, reaching 140.19 trillion yuan (US$20,066 billion), surpassing the 140 trillion mark for the first time.
The China-Mauritius Free Trade Agreement was presented as a catalyst for developing bilateral trade. This agreement will facilitate access to the Chinese market for products “Made in Mauritius” and is expected to attract investment and expertise, while positioning Mauritius as a strategic gateway to Africa.
Several concrete projects already illustrate this cooperation. Last year, several hundred Mauritian civil servants participated in training programs in China, while the first local artificial intelligence training session was held in Mauritius. Achievements include the renovation of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation building, the installation of a battery energy storage system, and the inauguration of the Renminbi Clearing House.
The China-Africa People’s Year of Exchange will be launched in 2026, strengthening trade and cultural ties within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and China’s four global initiatives.
Innovation remains a key focus of the partnership. China, now among the world’s top ten most innovative countries, is supporting Mauritius in the development of information technology and artificial intelligence. Starting January 1, 2026, reduced tariff rates on 935 product categories will further demonstrate China’s commitment to promoting international trade and investment.
