Promoting exchange programs
The newly accredited Ghanaian High Commissioner to Seychelles announced on Tuesday that Seychelles and Ghana are exploring collaboration in health and fisheries education.
This statement was made by Francisca Ashietey-Odunton after she presented her credentials to President Wavel Ramkalawan at the State House. Ashietey-Odunton stated : « We discussed strengthening the ties between Ghana and Seychelles during our talks ». According to the diplomat, one of the key topics was the 100th anniversary of the return of King Prempeh of Ashanti to Ghana after his exile in Seychelles. This occasion provides an opportunity to solidify further the bond between Seychelles and this West African country.
On October 10, 1988, Seychelles and Ghana signed a diplomatic treaty. However, the two countries share historical ties dating back to the late 1890s. The British colonial authorities at the time exiled the King of Ashanti and some of his family members to Seychelles.
Ghana and Seychelles share many commonalities. The goal is to work together in sectors such as fisheries, health, education, and trade to promote the well-being of our people. Ashietey-Odunton added that about youth, they are considering exchange programs that could benefit both countries.
The new High Commissioner’s career began in the media. She worked for four years as Deputy Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and has also served as an ambassador to Kenya, Turkey, South Africa, and Seychelles.
