Comoros – Ethiopia: A New Diplomatic Chapter

A Growing Strategic Collaboration

Diplomatic relations between the Comoros and Ethiopia are experiencing positive momentum, and both countries envision a future of enhanced cooperation.

The Ambassador of the Union of the Comoros to Ethiopia, Youssouf Mandoha Assoumani, emphasized in an interview that the strength of these ties could bring numerous benefits to the entire African continent if they were consolidated.

This prospect was fueled by several important bilateral exchanges. Demek Mekonnen, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, visited Moroni. During this meeting, he discussed economic and political issues with President Azali Assoumani. A memorandum of understanding to establish a joint ministerial commission was also signed, formalizing enhanced collaboration between the two countries.

The strengthening of ties between the two countries is all the more significant in light of recent official visits. In February 2024, the Comorian President visited Addis Ababa, where he praised Ethiopia’s impressive progress in urban development, infrastructure, and digitalization.

These developments illustrate the growth model that Ethiopia embodies for African nations. The strategic partnership with the Comoros could result in increased cooperation, not only in the economic sphere, but also in addressing shared continental challenges. By strengthening their ties, the two countries will be able to actively contribute to achieving Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals.
