Madagascar : Flour price remains stable

Averting any risk of price rises

According to the Ministry of Industrialization and Trade, the price of flour on the local market will remain stable and will not exceed 3,500 MGA per kilo (0.78 USD).

According to the head of Internal Trade, a fifty-kilo sack of flour costs 33 USD when it leaves local factories. Considering additional expenses such as transport, it is preferable that the price of flour does not exceed 0.78 USD per kilo in Antananarivo. This price is lower than that of imported flour, which, due to disruptions in sea freight and speculative behavior, can reach 45 USD per fifty-kilo bag.

Consumers will have access to the full range of flour available on the market. Local mills produced nearly 175,000 tonnes of flour this year, meeting 75 % of local needs and ensuring the availability of this essential foodstuff, thus avoiding any risk of shortages.

The Director of Internal Trade stated that the presence of local flour eliminates any risk of price rises. Bakers, the main consumers of flour, are reassured by this stability. According to the President of the Association of Professional Bakers of Madagascar, « the price of local flour has not changed for several months and remains constant ».
