18 % Increase in one year
Lychee exports have proven to be highly profitable in 2023, generating over 54 billion MGA (12 million USD), according to data from the General Directorate of Customs and the Central Bank.
The Central Bank’s quarterly publication provides detailed figures on lychee exports. In 2022, export revenues amounted to 45 billion ariary, marking an 18 % increase in just one year. The Central Bank attributes this revenue growth to a 7.4 % increase in the volume of lychees exported.
In 2023, Madagascar exported 16,860 tons of lychees. The primary destination for these exports is the European Union, accounting for 90 % of the value of shipments. Malagasy lychees can also be found in stores in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Morocco. The quality of these products has significantly improved in European markets and is making inroads into new markets. Madagascar aims to expand its lychee exports to Russia and Dubai.
Specific measures have been implemented to support producers and encourage their growth. A one-stop shop was established four years ago to simplify the preparation of documents and other administrative procedures for lychee collectors and exporters.
