The 2024 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas marks a turning point in the tech industry. Innovations are becoming more diverse and tailored to the specific needs of women at different stages of their lives, with artificial intelligence playing a pivotal role in enhancing women’s healthcare.
CES 2024 : Emergence of FemTech
Recent editions of CES, the world’s largest technology show, have highlighted technologies aimed at improving the health of women and babies. However, according to Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies, approximately 70 % of products are still designed with a male audience in mind.
This trend is shifting. CES 2024 showcases over 3,500 booths, many featuring exhibitors and start-ups presenting innovations specifically addressing women’s health. These technologies span various fields, including oncology, menopause, fertility tracking, and digital contraceptives.
Jessica Boothe, Director of Marketing Research at CTA and organizer of CES emphasizes that FemTech is proliferating. The digital women’s health market could reach 1.2 trillion USD by 2027, becoming an essential niche in the tech industry.
Remote cervical cancer screening with AI
South Korean company Aidot made waves at CES 2024 with its Cerviray AI tool. Powered by AI, this device is designed for remote cervical cancer screening, the fourth most common cancer in women. According to the World Health Organization, this disease caused over 570,000 new cases and 311,000 deaths in 2018. Yet, it remains one of the easiest to prevent and treat if detected early. Conversely, a late diagnosis significantly lowers survival rates.
Aidot hopes that Cerviray AI will boost global screening rates. Developed in collaboration with gynecologists and South Korean hospitals Anam and Bundang, this tool also paves the way for telemedicine. Its impact is especially relevant in developing countries, particularly in Africa, where medical infrastructure is lacking, and cervical cancer remains a leading cause of death.
Cerviray AI is based on the « IVA » (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid) method, a non-invasive technique that is simpler, faster, and more affordable than traditional cytological tests, such as pap smears. « A visual test performed by a specialist’s naked eye », explains Aidot. The diagnosis is immediate, whereas cytological tests can take days or weeks for results.
AI to improve women’s well-being
Menopause marks a new life phase for women, causing significant physical and mental changes. Mood swings, fatigue, and hot flashes are often overlooked, even though these symptoms can negatively impact productivity and quality of life.
Amira Health, a pioneer in FemTech, addresses menopause-related issues. Its Terra system, equipped with sensors and AI, predicts and prevents nighttime hot flashes. The bracelet analyzes biometric data to anticipate these disruptive episodes. Upon detection, a cooling mattress pad is activated, instantly lowering the temperature. This device reduces the frequency and intensity of hot flashes, ensuring more peaceful nights.
Another exhibitor at CES 2024, Movano Health, introduces Evie, a smart ring designed to enhance well-being. Using artificial intelligence, the ring analyzes biological data to identify conditions conducive to improved quality of life. The accompanying app tracks sleep, activity, calories, and mood, offering an optimal combination for feeling one’s best. Available in three finishes and sizes 5 to 11, Evie is priced at 269 USD and requires no subscription.
