AfDB – Togo: USD 39 million for climate-resilient agriculture

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved USD 102.79 million in financing to support farmers in Guinea, Senegal, and Togo, as part of the Multinational Program for the Promotion of Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains in Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ).

Program Objectives and Components

This program aims to strengthen the climate resilience of agriculture by implementing several key initiatives:

Irrigation and Renewable Energy: Installation of small-scale irrigation systems covering at least 39,179 hectares and provision of 2.59 megawatts (MW) of solar energy for water pumping. The program also finances the installation of renewable energy equipment with a cumulative capacity of 14.69 MW and the production of 10.24 MW of energy from biogas generated by biodigesters.

Resilient Agricultural Practices: Support for the adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices and technologies on approximately 40,000 hectares of land, including the development of 40,000 hectares of agroforestry for carbon sequestration.

Climate Information Services: Improvement of climate information services through the creation and expansion of a network of agro-meteorological and rainfall stations, as well as the deployment of technologies to strengthen early warning systems.

Expected Impact

The program is expected to directly benefit 1,104,728 farmers and indirectly 5,612,415 people, with particular attention paid to gender equality, with at least 50% of beneficiaries being women.

Specific Context in Togo

In Togo, this financing is part of a context where the country must mobilize nearly USD 14 billion by 2050 to address the effects of climate change, according to a World Bank report. The agricultural sector, which accounts for approximately 40% of GDP and employs 70% of the poor, is particularly vulnerable to climate hazards. Targeted investments in climate-smart agricultural solutions are therefore essential to increase the sector’s resilience.

This AfDB financing represents an important step in Togo’s efforts to strengthen the climate resilience of its agriculture and support rural communities in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
