Ouagadougou Transforms with Over 40 Billion CFA Francs in New Road Infrastructure

Burkina Faso is investing in road infrastructure to improve traffic flow in its capital. In Ouagadougou, over 40 billion CFA francs have been invested in new, modern roads, representing more than 22 km of newly inaugurated routes to enhance urban mobility, access to strategic neighborhoods, and the city’s connectivity.

A Major Project for the Capital

This program was officially launched on May 23, 2026, in Kossodo by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, in the presence of the Minister of Construction and Urban Planning, Mikaïlou Sidibé. A total of eight road infrastructure projects were inaugurated, including the Northern Ring Road, Avenue du Moogho Naaba, Avenue Yennega, and several access roads to administrative and security sites.

The objective is simple: to relieve congestion on the main roads, reduce travel times, and support the capital’s economic development. In a rapidly growing city, these investments address an urgent need for urban planning and smoother traffic flow.

The roads involved

Among the completed infrastructure projects are the Northwest Ring Road, the access road to the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Air Algérie crash, the access road to the General Bila Zagré camp in Kamboinsin, and the road to the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs. These projects are not merely road infrastructure: they also structure the urban space around administrative, memorial, and security considerations.

The North Ring Road alone measures 10.23 km, with 1,373 meters of service roads and 20,629 linear meters of sanitation and drainage networks. This level of detail demonstrates that the project goes beyond simply laying asphalt: it is a comprehensive development designed for long-term sustainability.

A National Investment

According to Minister Mikaïlou Sidibé, these 22 km of modern roads reflect a vision of sovereignty, resilience, and progress. The government is linking urban mobility to broader priorities, such as security, national cohesion, and economic growth.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the responsibility of road users and residents to preserve this infrastructure. This appeal to civic responsibility is important because the durability of roads depends as much on the quality of the construction as on their daily maintenance.

A Signal for Ouagadougou

For Ouagadougou, this project sends a strong political and economic signal. The Burkinabe capital has long suffered from congestion, rapid urbanization, and the need for major roads capable of supporting its expansion.

With this investment of over 40 billion CFA francs, the government is demonstrating its commitment to modernizing the city and tangibly improving the daily lives of its residents. In the long term, these infrastructures can also facilitate the economic attractiveness of the capital, by making travel faster and safer.
