Ivato Airport: a terminal modernized after more than 50 years

Renovation Complete

The domestic terminal at Ivato Airport has just been completely renovated, more than 50 years after it opened.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of the authorities of the Refoundation. This modernization brings several improvements. Passenger capacity has increased from 120 to 261 passengers per hour. Two baggage screening areas are now in operation instead of one. The waiting area has been expanded to 760 m² with 236 seats, compared to 380 m² and 151 seats previously. The number of boarding gates has increased from two to four, facilitating passenger flow.

The terminal also offers new amenities. These include indoor and outdoor shops, a children’s play area, rest areas, a VIP lounge, a private flight area, and a cultural exhibition space. Air traffic remains strong. During peak season, approximately 100 flights per week transit through Ivato Airport. In 2025, nearly 372,000 domestic passengers used this infrastructure, operated by Madagascar Airlines.

The Senior Advisor for the Refoundation, Colonel Rampanarivo Solofoniaina Thierry, emphasizes that this renovation transforms challenges into concrete results. He also believes that the airport reflects the country’s image and helps attract investors and tourists.

He also highlights the role of airport staff and stresses the importance of combating corruption, which he considers essential for the sustainable development of the tourism sector.

The cost of the renovations amounted to approximately 6 billion ariary (US$1.3 million). This inauguration also marks the tenth anniversary of Ravinala Airports’ management.
