30 tanks to boost milk production and hygiene

The Prefer Project Supports Young Livestock Farmers in Mwali

Thirty mobile water tanks, each with a capacity of 1,000 to 2,000 liters, were distributed to livestock farmers in Mwali as part of the Prefer project, to strengthen the dairy sector in the Comoros.

In addition to these tanks, the project also provided basins and other hygiene equipment designed to ensure safe milk production and improve sanitary conditions on farms.

The equipment was handed over on Sunday, April 5, at the Regional Directorate of Production, in the presence of Tadjidine Ben Ahmed, Secretary General of the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, and Livestock, Ali Ahamada, Chief of Staff, and representatives from the island. These donations follow the previous distribution of 30 dairy cows and 4 bulls, with the aim of sustainably structuring the sector and supporting local farmers.

To achieve better yields, it’s essential to ensure the health and hygiene of the animals. We support farmers throughout the entire process and also prepare for the processing of dairy products,” explained Tadjidine Ben Ahmed.

The Prefer project also encourages young Comorians to invest in livestock farming and to add value to local milk, for example, by producing artisanal cheeses “made in Comoros.” According to the Secretary General, this approach can create sustainable jobs and promote local expertise while developing a resilient dairy sector.

Mohamed Ahamadi, the project coordinator in Mwali, also known as “Japonais,” indicated that between February and March 2026, approximately 800 liters of milk were produced and consumed locally. Production is expected to increase in the coming months thanks to investments in the processing, distribution, and marketing of dairy products.
