Senegal has reached a significant milestone with the launch of a battery energy storage plant, a project aimed at strengthening the stability of the electricity grid and accelerating the integration of renewable energies. This development confirms the country’s ambition to modernize its energy system while reducing its dependence on thermal power plants.

A Strategic Project for the Electricity Grid

Located in Bokhol, in the Saint-Louis region, this infrastructure combines a 16 MW solar power plant with a 10 MW lithium-ion battery system, for an estimated annual production of 36 GWh. According to available information, this is the first Senegalese plant dedicated to battery storage for grid regulation, making it a pioneering project in the country.

Why this project is important

Energy storage addresses a major challenge of solar power: production varies depending on the amount of sunshine, while electricity demand can be high at other times of the day. Thanks to batteries, Senegal can better absorb production fluctuations, stabilize grid frequency, and secure electricity supply during peak periods.

This project is part of a broader dynamic of transforming Senegal’s energy mix, with an increasing emphasis on renewables and storage solutions.
