Concrete Actions to Strengthen Agricultural Production
More than 50,000 farmers were trained in sustainable production methods, and 14,000 young people learned agricultural techniques between 2022 and 2023 in Madagascar.
These actions help producers work more efficiently and improve food security in the country. As part of the national roadmap for transforming the food system 2022-2030, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is placing farmers at the heart of its efforts. “If farmers don’t produce, there is no food,” the Ministry emphasizes, highlighting the importance of supporting producers from cultivation to marketing.
The program has distributed more than 130 tons of maize seeds and 230,000 packets of vegetable seeds. To encourage locally sourced food, 800 school canteens were supplied with domestically grown produce, and four food banks were established in the South. Regarding the environment and land tenure, over 570,000 land titles were distributed, 2,000 hectares were cultivated using agroecological techniques, 6,600 hectares of protected areas were restored, 440 hectares were reforested, and 680,000 seedlings were produced. In addition, 43,500 hectares of agricultural plains were irrigated or restored, strengthening farm production and resilience.
In 2024-2025, these efforts continued with new concrete actions. The Ministry strengthened the implementation of the roadmap, consolidated the Task Force responsible for the food system, and launched a digital system to track all activities. Projects in partnership with institutional and financial actors have improved the coordination and impact of actions on the ground.
On March 18, 2026, in Antananarivo, farmers gathered for training in production management, markets, food security, and natural resource protection. They analyzed the obstacles to sustainable production and shared solutions for greater participation and more effective action. The goal is to increase production, improve access to food, and sustainably strengthen the Malagasy food system by placing farmers at the heart of the country’s development.
