New Secure Banknotes
As part of efforts to strengthen monetary security, the Central Bank of the Comoros has announced the introduction of new 10,000 (US$23.80) and 5,000 Comorian franc banknotes, effective January 5, 2026.
The new banknotes retain the same design as the old ones so that the public can easily recognize them. However, these banknotes now feature more advanced security measures, visible to the naked eye and difficult to imitate. These features will make it easier to detect counterfeit banknotes and ensure the reliability of transactions.
Furthermore, the Central Bank indicates that certain details have been updated. The banknotes now bear the year of issue, 2025, and the unique signature of the Governor, Dr. Younoussa Imani. These changes enhance the transparency and authenticity of the banknotes in circulation.
The public does not need to take any action: the old banknotes remain valid and will continue to circulate alongside the new ones. The Central Bank is thus ensuring a smooth and seamless transition for users. Both versions of the banknotes can be used freely in everyday transactions.
In its press release, the department calls on citizens, businesses, and government agencies to familiarize themselves with the new features of the banknotes. It also encourages everyone to participate in awareness campaigns to avoid confusion and limit the risk of fraud.
