A Breath of Fresh Air for Drivers in Réunion
Fuel prices have seen a significant drop at the pump in Réunion since January 1, 2026. Diesel is now €1.23 per liter, 6 cents less than in December. Unleaded gasoline has also decreased slightly to €1.56, down one cent.
This decrease can be attributed to several factors. Global oil prices have fallen sharply: -12.7% for diesel and -3.79% for unleaded gasoline. The rise of the euro against the dollar (+1.1%) has also contributed to lower import costs. Furthermore, maritime transport was less expensive this month due to a reduced chartering of a single vessel, resulting in a 5.21% decrease in logistics costs.
However, some price increases have mitigated this overall decrease. Port fees at the Grand Port Maritime of Réunion have been slightly increased. The energy savings certificate scheme, which is entering a new period (2026-2030), also adds 2 cents per liter to the price of diesel and unleaded gasoline. This system is based on the “polluter pays” principle, which requires suppliers to finance energy-saving measures.
Regarding domestic gas, the prices of butane and propane have increased on the global market. This should have raised the price of a 12.5 kg cylinder by approximately 26 cents. However, thanks to the regional subsidy, the price remains capped at €18 for families in Réunion. Without this subsidy, the cylinder would cost €18.59.
