The 2025 lychee season is off to a good start with encouraging prices

A Good Start for the Eastern Region

The 2025 lychee season began on November 20th in Analamalotra, in the Eastern Region. Producers are welcoming this new season with optimism. The harvests show good quality and a higher yield than last year.

The price per kilo reached 2,150 ariary (US$0.48), compared to 1,000 ariary (US$0.22) in 2024. This increase gives farmers a boost after several months of uncertainty.

The President of the Ainga Miara-Mamiratra cooperative, Tody Ernest, emphasized the well-organized market this year. “Producers know the price before the harvest, which facilitates planning and limits losses. Local cooperatives are thus strengthening their position in the lychee value chain, a vital sector for the economy of the East Coast,” he explained.

For 2025, exports are projected to reach nearly 20,000 tons destined for the European market. The Minister of Trade and Consumer Affairs, Andriamadison Haingotiana, is visiting Ivoloina-Toamasina to meet with farmers and observe the preparations. She is also visiting Emexal, an exporting company recently affected by a fire, to offer moral and technical support to its management.

The ship Atlantic Klipper has already docked in Toamasina to load the first containers. The government has announced an equitable distribution of export quotas, a decision aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. This measure complements the economic recovery policy, which focuses on job creation and promoting local production.
