Egypt has reached a major milestone in its digital transformation with the official launch of 5G services, during a highly symbolic event held on June 4, 2025, at the foot of the Giza pyramids. This launch marks the country’s entry into a new era of advanced connectivity and confirms its regional ambitions in information and communication technologies.
Launch Orchestrated by the Four Major operators
The country’s four main operators—Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt, and Telecom Egypt—simultaneously activated their 5G networks in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Information Technology Amr Talaat, as well as numerous government officials and industry representatives.
This activation follows the awarding of 5G licenses between October 2024 and January 2025, with total investments exceeding 2.7 billion USD, including 85 million USD in loans granted to Orange Egypt by the EBRD and Banque Misr.
A Lever for Digital Transformation and Economic growth
The Prime Minister hailed 5G as a key milestone in the “Digital Egypt” strategy, highlighting the driving role of the ICT sector in economic growth, job creation, and modernization of public services. Minister Amr Talaat emphasized the impact of 5G in accelerating the digitalization of the economy, developing smart cities, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT), and strengthening Egypt’s position in global technology rankings.
Concrete Benefits for Individuals and Businesses
5G promises ultra-fast connection speeds, reduced latency, and the ability to simultaneously manage a very large number of connected devices, paving the way for new uses in healthcare, education, industry, public services, and entertainment. Operators, such as Vodafone Egypt, have already started deploying the network at more than 2,000 sites across the country, with the goal of rapidly expanding coverage nationwide.
A Symbol of Innovation at the of Heritage
Choosing the pyramids as the launch site embodies Egypt’s desire to combine its millennia-old heritage with technological modernity. The operators’ leaders emphasized the historic significance of this event, which echoes the country’s vision: making connectivity a cornerstone of national development, economic competitiveness, and digital inclusion.
The official launch of 5G at the foot of the pyramids establishes Egypt as a major player in the digital revolution in Africa and the Middle East. This rollout is expected to accelerate the country’s digital transformation, foster innovation, and open new horizons for Egyptian society and the economy.
