Opening of the first AI Conference in Morocco

Morocco officially launched its very first National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference on July 1st and 2nd, 2025, in Rabat, at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University campus. This major event, held under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, marks a decisive step in the Kingdom’s digital strategy, aiming to position AI as a strategic lever for sustainable development, digital sovereignty, and modernization of the country.

An Unprecedented and Multidisciplinary National Gathering

The conference brings together a wide range of stakeholders: representatives from multiple ministries, public institutions, the private sector, investment funds, sovereign wealth funds, Moroccan startups, as well as international figures, academics, civil society members, and talents from the diaspora. This diversity reflects the desire to mobilize all of the country’s key players around a common ambition: building a sovereign, ethical, and tailored national AI strategy.

Central Theme: “An Efficient and Ethical AI Strategy Serving Our Society”

The core focus of the conference is constructing a national strategy that integrates AI responsibly, emphasizing ethics, technological sovereignty, and social inclusion. Amal El Fallah-Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition, stressed that AI is no longer a futuristic technology but a reality already embedded in many sectors (health, education, banking) that must now be mastered and regulated.

Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch highlighted the “collective will” to place AI at the heart of public policies, insisting on a strategy that is efficient, ethical, and inclusive, serving sustainable human development.

Targeted Strategic Sectors for Transformative Impact

The conference is organized around 13 sectoral verticals where AI can have a major impact: administrative reform and modernization, education and new pedagogies, health and precision medicine, smart agriculture, Industry 4.0, security, culture, media, governance, innovation, infrastructure, and international cooperation. This broad scope illustrates the intention to integrate AI into all aspects of the country’s economic and social life.

A Two-Phase Program: Technical and Political

The first day is dedicated to technical sectoral sessions and demonstrations by innovative AI startups. The second day focuses on political, ethical dimensions and international cooperation. The closing will feature the presentation of recommendations and the signing of several memoranda of understanding with national and international partners.

Towards Ethical Regulation and Strengthened Digital Sovereignty

Morocco aims to establish a rigorous regulatory framework to govern AI, in collaboration with institutions such as the CNDP (National Commission for the Control of Personal Data Protection), DGSSI, and DGSN. This framework seeks to ensure algorithmic transparency, the right to objection, fairness, and non-discrimination. AI is seen not only as a technical tool but also as a geopolitical issue and a marker of sovereignty.

Commitment to Inclusion and Human Development

The conference also emphasizes investment in human capital: training, coding schools, professional retraining, support for startups, and digital transformation of SMEs. Morocco thus aims to leave no one behind in this digital transition, relying on an inclusive and responsible strategy.

Conclusion

With these first National AI Conferences, Morocco asserts its ambition to become a credible and sovereign player in the field of artificial intelligence by combining technological innovation, ethics, and sustainable development. This unprecedented event in Rabat paves the way for an ambitious roadmap to integrate AI in service of Moroccan society and its digital future.
