Ghana has secured 30 million USD in funding from China for the construction of a state-of-the-art market in Aflao, a strategic town located in the southeast of the country, on the border with Togo. This project is part of President John Mahama’s 2024 election campaign promises and aims to boost the local economy as well as regional trade.
Official Agreement Signed in Accra
The official signing of the grant agreement took place on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra. Ghanaian Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa signed on behalf of the Ghanaian government, while Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa represented Beijing. This ceremony marks a new milestone in Sino-Ghanaian strategic cooperation, already demonstrated by the success of the Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast, also funded by China.
A Strategic Project for the Volta Region
The Aflao market is set to become a major commercial hub linking Ghana to Togo and the wider West African region. It will facilitate trade between Aflao, the economic zones of Ho in Ghana, and Lomé in Togo, thereby strengthening regional integration and creating numerous direct and indirect jobs. The project will include modern infrastructure to ensure a safe and efficient commercial environment.
Successful Sino-Ghanaian Cooperation
The Chinese funding continues a strong bilateral relationship between the two countries. The Kotokuraba market, built with similar financing, has become a model of urban modernization and economic revitalization. The new Aflao market aims to replicate this success by delivering tangible benefits to the local population and reinforcing cross-border economic activity.
Outlook and Commitments
Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa praised the Chinese support, emphasizing that this project fulfills President Mahama’s commitment and will contribute to regional economic growth. Ambassador Tong Defa stressed the importance of concrete, people-centered projects, reflecting Beijing’s desire to strengthen ties with Ghana through initiatives that benefit both nations.
