1st African Green Economy Forum in Tangier

Tangier hosted in July 2025 the first African regional Green Economy Forum, a major step to accelerate the ecological transition of African cities towards carbon neutrality.

A Forum Under Royal Patronage

Organized under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this forum brought together over 400 participants from Africa and beyond, including public and private actors, city representatives, experts, and members of international organizations committed to the green economy.

Adoption of the Tangier Declaration

At the end of two days of discussions and debates, participants adopted the “Tangier Declaration”, which calls for integrating carbon neutrality into African urban policies. This declaration includes 15 key commitments to promote sustainable ecological transformation, including:

  • Integrating carbon neutrality objectives into urban planning strategies.
  • Strengthening partnerships between public and private sectors.
  • Increasing support for renewable energy, clean transport, sustainable waste management, climate-smart agriculture, and green buildings.
  • Mobilizing digital solutions for enhanced urban sustainability.

The Central Role of Youth and Innovation

The forum highlighted the essential role of African youth, technological innovation, and nature-based approaches to support this green transition. Discussions also emphasized the need for broad inclusion of local populations and businesses in this transformative process.

A Strategic Partnership for the Region

A strategic partnership was signed between the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council and the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) to concretely support the implementation of the ecological transition at the regional level, thus creating a ripple effect across other African regions.

Towards a Green and Prosperous African Future

This emblematic forum marks a strong commitment by Morocco and its African partners to build a more environmentally respectful future in Africa, with cities serving as models for sustainable development and carbon neutrality. Morocco thereby asserts its role as a regional and continental hub for promoting the green economy.
