Afreximbank: George Elombi appointed President

George Elombi was appointed President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) at the Annual General Meeting held in Abuja. Afreximbank, a key pan-African institution for financing intra-African trade, is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt. A Cameroonian lawyer by training, he joined Afreximbank in 1996 as a legal officer before rising through the ranks to become Executive Vice President in charge of Governance, Legal Affairs, and Corporate Services.

His remarkable management during the health crisis, with the mobilization of more than USD 2 billion for the purchase of vaccines in Africa and the Caribbean, largely contributed to his recognition. Holding a PhD in commercial arbitration from the London School of Economics and a graduate of the University of Yaoundé, the new President combines legal expertise, African experience, and strategic vision.

His appointment symbolizes a major step forward for Cameroonian economic diplomacy and opens new perspectives for Central Africa, long absent from the continent’s leading financial spheres. Already committed to making Afreximbank a driver of industrialization, George Elombi aims to achieve an asset portfolio of USD 250 billion within ten years, thus strengthening the bank’s role in economic integration and African sovereignty.
