The Vanilleraie and the Volcan lodge under the ministerial spotlight

Réunion Island showcases its natural and artisanal treasures

Réunion Island combines tradition and modernity to attract visitors. On September 1st, Regional President Huguette Bello accompanied the Minister of Tourism, Nathalie Delattre, to the inauguration of the Gîte du Volcan, in Pas de Bellecombe.

Renovated and modernized, the gîte can now accommodate more than 100 people, an increase of nearly 50% in its capacity. Visitors enjoy a spectacular view of Piton de la Fournaise, a natural gem listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Réunion Region funded the project with €6 million, thanks to co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The President praised the work of the Picard family, site managers, for the quality of their welcome and the management of the gîte. “This place showcases our island, both tender and angry, with a volcano that’s worth the detour,” she said.

The ministerial visit continued at the Grand Hazier estate in Sainte-Suzanne, on the historic Vanilleraie site. The Minister learned about the stages of making Genuine Bourbon Vanilla, from planting the vanilla trees to the traditional processing techniques inherited from Edmond Albius.

According to Nathalie Delattre, the vanilla industry represents not only a symbol of excellence, but also a factor in the island’s influence. “The Réunion Region aims to welcome 600,000 visitors per year, while preserving its natural treasures and traditional know-how, combining authenticity and innovation,” she added.
