The tourism sector is showing positive signs

An encouraging start to the year, but a local market needs revitalization

The first quarter of 2025 was positive for Réunion’s tourism sector, despite the challenges related to the health situation.

According to data from Roland Garros Airport, arrivals increased by 3% compared to the previous year, an encouraging sign for the island.

Between January and March 2025, the destination recorded a 13.3% increase in bookings for the period from May to October. Air capacity between May and December also increased by 1.8%. These results translate into a 1.4% increase in tourism revenue, reaching EUR 128.7 million, as well as an 11.3% growth in overnight stays in seasonal rentals.

However, local tourism consumption remains a concern. According to the Synthèses agency, local stays decreased by 33% in February and overnight stays fell by 51.6% in January. This significant decline is largely attributed to the impact of the health crisis on local businesses.

In response to this situation, the Réunion Tourism Committee has announced several measures to support the local economy. A targeted communications plan will be launched during the May holidays to stimulate domestic consumption, and a promotional campaign for the destination is planned for after the crisis. Authorities are also focusing on market diversification to ensure the sustainability of the tourism sector.
