Mayotte’s underwater treasures revealed by OceanXplorer

Precise data to protect the lagoon

The results of the OceanXplorer mission were presented on September 3, 2025, at the Mayotte Marine Natural Park Management Council.

Carla Scalabrin, from IFREMER, presented the surveys on the Fani Maoré volcano and the numerous updated maps. This data provides precise information on the marine environment. According to Annabelle Djeribi, Director of the Park, these discoveries demonstrate the exceptional richness of the area and could support the UNESCO designation of Mayotte’s maritime zone.

The Council also discussed the consequences of Cyclone Chido and pollution on ecosystems. The Director indicated that 80% of the mangroves had suffered damage, especially the mangroves, and that 66% of the corals had disappeared between 2023 and 2025. Global warming and the cyclone caused these losses. Abdou Dahalani, President of the Park, called on residents to reduce pollution and traffic to help the coral reef regenerate. “Everyone must act to preserve water quality,” he emphasized.

The fishing industry played a central role in the discussions. The President affirmed his commitment to developing fishing in Mayotte despite the constraints of European Union regulations. “We are subject to regulations, while in Seychelles, tuna fishing is progressing without restrictions,” he explained. The Park plans to collect data on local fisheries to demonstrate the absence of overfishing and obtain exemptions.

The 46 members of the Council reviewed the report on the activities of the bureau and committees and discussed directions for the future of the Park. The objective is to protect ecosystems while promoting economic development.
