Mayotte welcomes a boat committed to fighting plastic pollution

There weeks of activities with the Plastic Odyssey

From July 15th to August 5th, the Plastic Odyssey boat is in Mayotte, at the port of Longoni. This boat travels around the world to combat plastic pollution in the oceans.

The Mayotte Nature Environnement (MNE) federation of associations is organizing this stopover with the help of the NGO Acted. Every minute, 19 tons of plastic are dumped into the sea. To combat this problem, the Plastic Odyssey has been circumnavigating the globe since October 2022. This ship is equipped with a small laboratory that tests new ways to recycle plastics.

During its stops, the boat shares its techniques and raises awareness among local residents. Mayotte is one of the regions most affected by plastic waste, especially after Cyclone Chido, which left a large amount of waste. To help clean up the island, the Plastic Odyssey decided to stop for three weeks on Mahoran territory.

During this stopover, MNE is organizing several free activities to explain the dangers of plastic and demonstrate how to recycle it. These activities are open to everyone across the island. Several local associations, such as Les Naturalistes de Mayotte and Surfrider Mayotte, have already collected plastic waste and will continue to do so. The collected waste is stored by the company CITEO. Then, with the help of the Plastic Odyssey team and the company Habit’Âme, this plastic will be recycled.
