The Mozambique Channel: an ecosystems protected Thanks to the NoCaMo Project
The Flagship Award was presented to Madagascar at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, held from June 9 to 13.
This award was presented to Max Andonirina Fontaine, Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development. This recognition celebrates efforts to protect marine biodiversity in the northern zone of the Mozambique Channel. The NoCaMo project, funded by the French Global Environment Facility, brings together Madagascar, Mozambique, the Comoros, and Tanzania, as well as several technical partners such as WWF Madagascar and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
The Mozambique Channel, rich in marine species, faces threats such as urbanization, overfishing, and climate change. Thanks to this regional collaboration, actions are being implemented to restore and preserve this precious ecosystem. Minister Andonirina Fontaine emphasized that this distinction motivates continued efforts to protect the marine environment, a key issue for sustainable development and coastal communities. “This award confirms Madagascar’s position as a major player in ocean protection and marine biodiversity conservation,” he said.
