HSBC supports bus electrification in Mauritius
Mauritius aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030. The transport sector, which alone produces 42% of emissions, is at the heart of this strategy.
To achieve this, the University of the Mascarenes launched a project called Green CEV in 2022, in collaboration with French researchers and with financial support from HSBC.
This project aims to use solar energy to charge electric vehicles. The final phase of the project focuses on buses. A workshop was held on May 12th on the Rose Hill campus to present the results and proposals to stakeholders: bus company managers, experts, government representatives, and private partners.
The researchers propose installing solar panels on bus terminals to generate clean electricity. This energy would be used to recharge buses during their breaks. According to preliminary studies, the cost of solar electricity would be Rs 7.83 (0.17 USD) per kWh, while diesel costs Rs 214.29 per kWh. This would allow for savings of more than 96%.
