Social assistance: Support for the purchase of water tanks

550 families benefit from a subsidy

On March 8, 2025, a ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Pamplemousses District Council to present vouchers to 550 beneficiaries of the water tank program.

This initiative, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities in collaboration with the Central Water Authority and the Development Bank of Mauritius, aims to support low-income families by enabling them to acquire storage devices and domestic water pumps.

Launched in the 2011 budget, this program helps households suffering from water supply difficulties. The government provides a subsidy of 15,000 rupees (330 USD) for the purchase of equipment for storing water. This assistance is intended for households whose monthly income is less than 60,000 rupees.

The Minister of Energy, Patrick Gervais Assirvaden, underlines the seriousness of this current situation in Mauritius. Thus, he specifies that the lack of rainfall has emptied the reserves, leading to significant shortages. To deal with this crisis, restrictions are being put in place, including a ban on washing cars and irrigating sugar cane fields.

The Minister also announced that the objective of the program is to offer these storage solutions to 30,000 families by the end of the year. As a priority in the areas most affected by water cuts.
