Maritime Training Compliant with International Standards

An Ambitious Project for Youth and the Economy

A mission of experts from the Maritime Institute of Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) recently assessed the feasibility of merchant marine training in the Comoros.

For five days, these experts inspected the infrastructure of the National School of Fishing and Merchant Marine (ENPMM). The objective is to determine the necessary adjustments to make the institution suitable for this new program.

The project aims to train maritime officers and offer internationally recognized certifications. This is intended to meet the needs of the sector and combat youth unemployment. According to Omar Houmadi, Director of ENPMM, the school will need to make certain adjustments to be fully ready to comply with international standards.

The project will be rolled out in three phases. The first phase involves supervising trainers to ensure the quality of teaching. The second phase focuses on the training of maritime officers, including commanders and captains. Finally, a retraining program will be offered to the 400 sailors already in service to enable them to obtain higher-level certification.

This project, supported by the Interconnectivity of Islands initiative, offers young Comorians an opportunity to train in a key sector of the economy, while strengthening local skills to better meet global challenges.
