Strengthened environmental projects
For 2025, Hawa Mayotte is planning several important initiatives. These include monitoring microplastics in the air, an issue that has received little attention in the region.
A new air quality index will also be implemented with the support of France Télévisions to provide daily information to residents. Educational workshops will also be offered in schools to raise awareness about air pollution among young people. To support these initiatives, a new agreement has just been signed between the Mamoudzou City Hall and Hawa Mayotte. This partnership aims to strengthen joint efforts to improve air quality. During this meeting, Deputy Mayor Loutoufi Nourainya reiterated the importance of working together. “Air quality in Mayotte is not always healthy. “We all need to be aware of the impact of our actions,” he said.
Since its approval in 2014 by the Ministry of the Environment, the association has been monitoring the air and conducting awareness-raising activities on the island. In 2024, Cyclone Chido severely disrupted operations, causing damage to 11 of the 19 monitoring stations, at an estimated cost of €70,000. Despite these losses, operations were able to continue, thanks in particular to the fixed station at Convallescence, which is still in operation.
