Energy: Reunion Island relies on wind power to achieve autonomy

22 areas identified for wind power generation

The Réunion Region has identified 22 locations on the island that could accommodate new wind turbines. These sites are presented in a document called the Regional Wind Power Scheme (SRE), currently open for public consultation until September 4.

This plan was developed with the help of several partners, including DEAL, SPL Énergies Réunion, and landscape specialists. According to a well-informed source, the goal is to move towards energy self-sufficiency by 2030 by producing more electricity from wind. Currently, the island is still far from this goal. The Multi-Year Energy Program (PPE) provides for 91.5 megawatts of wind power to be installed by 2028, but only 30 MW are actually in operation at the moment.

The SRE indicates two large areas that appear well-suited: the north and northeast of the island. These locations benefit from good winds, are fairly accessible, and are not overly urbanized. The total potential production is estimated to be between 194 and 324 MW, but this remains an estimate, as other constraints such as environmental and urban planning remain to be studied. This document does not replace official permits. Its role is to guide municipalities, project leaders, and residents to better understand the possibilities and limitations of wind power in Réunion.
