Decentralization: Ambatosoa Region officially inaugurated

Taxes remain in Maroantsetra to finance its development

July 26, 2025, is an important date for Maroantsetra and Mananara Nord. A new region, called Ambatosoa, has been officially created.

During the inauguration ceremony, Malagasy President Andry Rajoelina explained that Maroantsetra had long been overlooked due to a lack of administrative infrastructure. “This creation of the Ambatosoa Region is a major step forward for local government. This town will no longer be a forgotten area,” he stated.

The city becomes the capital of this new region. It is no longer just a district capital, but a full-fledged prefecture. The new prefecture building, inaugurated that day, will be the official headquarters of the regional administration.

The Head of State also announced that all taxes collected in the region will remain in place. This money will be used to build new infrastructure and improve the lives of residents. “This is the beginning of a true decentralization policy,” he added. Rabefenara Louis Velombity was introduced as the First Prefect of the Ambatosoa Region. He will be responsible for leading this new administration. In addition to the Prefecture, several important infrastructure projects were inaugurated, including a modern hospital. This hospital will provide better care to residents, something that has been long-awaited.
