Awareness and Preparedness in Ndzuani Schools
More than 200 students participated in a cyclone risk awareness campaign on June 3, 2025, organized by the General Directorate of Civil Security (DGSC) and UNICEF. This campaign involves around twenty schools on Ndzuani Island.
The teams visited several schools, including Misiri Primary School and Mutsamudu High School. Students attended presentations and were able to ask questions. Posters and leaflets were distributed to better explain the instructions to follow in the event of an alert.
Mohamed Saïd Ahamed, Head of the Research and Prevention Department at the DGSC, explains that awareness-raising began last year with journalists and associations. “Today, we are targeting young people, because they are often the ones most affected by natural disasters,” he says.
This campaign is part of a national strategy, led with UNICEF, which also plans to soon include training for teachers. Loutfi Mohamed, a trainer, emphasizes the importance of knowing where to take shelter, how to prepare, and why it’s important to remain vigilant even after the alert has ended.
