Comoros celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its independence

National Pride and Renewed Hope

The Comoros celebrated its fiftieth anniversary of independence on July 6, 2025. A ceremony was held in Moroni, bringing together African heads of state, diplomats, foreign delegations, and citizens from the four islands.

This historic anniversary was an opportunity to pay tribute to the architects of freedom, to take stock of the progress made, and to outline the prospects for a more promising future. A heartfelt tribute was paid to the pioneers of independence.

“Thanks to their commitment, the country was able to proclaim its sovereignty in 1975, uniting the islands of Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan, and Mayotte. History has remembered their courage and vision in the face of colonization and political obstacles,” declared President Azali Assoumani during his speech.

According to the Head of State, the Comoros’ journey has been marked by ups and downs. The first decades experienced political instability, coups d’état, and internal divisions. However, the will to remain united and build a strong state has never wavered. Reforms have been undertaken to strengthen institutions, with peaceful political transitions and democratic progress.

Concrete progress has been made: a school enrollment rate of over 97%, a decline in infant mortality, an improvement in the health system, and expanded access to electricity and drinking water. The diaspora also plays a major role, with remittances representing 30% of GDP and supporting education, health, and local entrepreneurship.

The Emerging Comoros Plan was highlighted as a development tool. Its priorities include economic diversification, promotion of renewable energy, support for youth and women, development of tourism and agriculture, and modernization of public services. This 50th anniversary does not mark an end, but a new impetus. A call is made to all Comorians, on the islands and abroad, to build together a modern, united, and forward-looking country.
