Antananarivo: towards equitable access to water for all

35 new boreholes to facilitate access to drinking water

The Malagasy government is stepping up its efforts to improve the drinking water supply around the capital. At the Council of Ministers on September 25, 2024, a project to drill 35 new wells was approved to serve the municipalities of Antananarivo, Renivohitra, Atsimondrano, Avaradrano, and Ambohidratrimo.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene published on July 10, 2025, 95% of the work has already been completed at several sites such as Antanimora – Ampasanimalo, Ambohipo, Ankerana, Bemasoandro, and Andranonahoatra. These wells have been inspected and approved.

Other projects are still underway in Ampahibato, Mahitsy, Ambatofotsy, and Farahindra. The stated objective is to address the lack of drinking water and improve hygiene conditions in the affected areas. The Ministry ensures that quality infrastructure is put in place, adapted to local realities.

Beyond the Analamanga region, similar initiatives are underway in rural areas. In the Mananjary district, Vatovavy region, the Mahatsara Sud health center was recently equipped with UNICEF support.

The new facilities include separate toilets, a medical waste incinerator, and a 2 m³ solar pumping system. “This progress demonstrates the commitment of the authorities and partners to improve access to water and health services, thus contributing to better protecting the health of populations, particularly in rural areas,” emphasized a Ministry official. These multisectoral efforts reinforce the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to water, a fundamental right for all.
