Climate resilience: Madagascar receives USD 130 million

World Bank and Finance Resilience in Southern Madagascar

The Big Island has obtained USD 130 million in financing from the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). This support aims to strengthen the resilience of the southern part of the country to the effects of climate change.

This project includes the rehabilitation of 200 kilometers of national roads in southern Madagascar. According to the official press release, this initiative also includes the construction of a multifunctional dam to improve water management in drought-affected areas. In addition, housing will be built to provide better living conditions for local populations.

The south is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change. Frequent droughts lead to declining harvests and a scarcity of drinking water resources. This situation complicates the lives of residents and exacerbates their precariousness. This program is part of the Regional Climate Resilience Project (RCRP), which helps several countries in East and Southern Africa to better cope with climate challenges.
