Roche-Bois : Reconstruction of the Footbridge Finally Begins

More Modern and Secure Footbridge

After nearly a year of waiting, the reconstruction work on the Roche-Bois footbridge in Mauritius, over the M2 highway, officially begins on February 6.

The Roche-Bois footbridge, built in 1977, was damaged following an accident on February 24 last year. While awaiting its reconstruction, a temporary pedestrian passage was set up with speed bumps and traffic lights. However, crossing the highway remains a challenge for residents.

In the presence of the Minister of National Infrastructure, Ajay Gunness, the Minister of Housing, Shakeel Mohamed, as well as the Minister of Industry, Aadil Ameer Meea, MP Ehsan Juman, and local residents, the first spades are turned. The project, entrusted to General Construction Ltd, is expected to be completed in October 2025 after eight months of work.

Regarding the new structure, several notable improvements are integrated to ensure better comfort and enhanced safety for users. Once the work is completed, its height will exceed regulatory standards, increasing from 5.3 meters to 5.7 meters. Additionally, the installation of a metal shelter, translucent panels, and solar lighting ensures a more pleasant crossing, even in bad weather.

Minister Ajay Gunness reaffirms the government’s priority for this project. « Since taking office, we have accelerated the process to offer a secure and modern infrastructure », he emphasizes.
