The Comoros strengthens its health system
On July 22, 2025, a visit was made to the El-Maarouf University Hospital (CHU) construction site.
Moussa Dada, project manager, explained that the inauguration will take place in several stages. The first phase will include a space with 300 beds. Then, the hospital’s other existing services will be moved and installed in the new building. Prime Minister Dr. Aboubacar Said Anli, Minister of Health Ahamada Sidi Nahouda, and World Bank Division Manager for East Africa, Fily Sissoko, participated in this visit. Minister of Finance Ibrahim Mohamed Abdourazak and other officials were also present. For the hospital to function properly, medical equipment must be received.
The Comoros government and the World Bank are financing these purchases through a project called Compass. This project also helps to organize the work and follow the plan of the new medical institute.
The university hospital will have a large 1,200 m³ water reservoir to provide the necessary water. A machine to burn medical waste will be installed. The hospital will also be powered by a solar project, in addition to the regular electricity grid. A dedicated water borehole will be drilled for the facility thanks to another water project. Elaziz Ben Ahmed, head of the government’s “Social Pole,” reassured residents.
According to him, this larger center will allow more patients to be treated in better conditions. This project will also avoid past problems when foreign diplomats were forced to close their offices due to the lack of quality care.
