SACREEE: Madagascar becomes the 12th member

A strategic for the energy future

Madagascar has just signed the SACREEE Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding (IGMOA), becoming the 12th SADC member country to commit to this initiative.

SACREEE, or the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, was created in 2015 by the Energy Ministers of SADC countries. “Its objective is to promote access to modern, clean, and reliable energy in the region by promoting the use of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies,” according to the authorities.

To date, eleven countries have already signed the agreement, and seven of them have ratified it: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. According to Olivier Jean Baptiste, Malagasy Minister of Energy: “By joining this group, the Big Island is demonstrating its commitment to improving access to electricity for its population and to participating in the fight against climate change.”

This signing marks a major step forward for Madagascar. “The country will now be able to collaborate with other SACREEE members, participate in joint projects, obtain financing, and benefit from technical support,” he added. With this decision, the government affirms its commitment to developing a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy sector. For many rural areas still without electricity, this commitment could also mean better access to energy in the years to come.
