Return to normal energy after the devastation of Cyclone Garance
The Rivière de l’Est hydroelectric power plant, the backbone of Reunion Island’s renewable energy production, is back in operation after the devastation of Cyclone Garance.
Two months after the devastating cyclone, temporary repairs to the high-voltage lines, which had been severely damaged, now allow the energy produced to be redirected to the island’s electricity grid.
The cyclone destroyed 21 high-voltage pylons, disrupting energy supply, according to the company’s official statement. EDF in Reunion Island, working with RTE teams from mainland France, addressed this major challenge with unprecedented organizational capacity. Not in 50 years has the company faced such an impact on Reunion Island’s electricity system.
At the same time, work on the water intake for the hydraulic system was completed remarkably quickly. In just under eight weeks, specialized equipment, including helicopter-borne resources, restored the damaged facilities. This meticulous work is essential to ensuring stable, renewable electricity production, which is particularly crucial for evening demand management.
This resilience in the face of an extreme weather event underscores Reunion Island’s ability to recover quickly thanks to effective cooperation between EDF, partner companies, and the mobilization of local stakeholders. However, final repair work has already begun and is expected to last approximately two years. A press conference detailing this phase will be held shortly.
