Schools improved with recycled plastic furniture

Renovation of the Ivato Base and Andafiavaratra Primary Schools in Antananarivo

The Ivato Base and Andafiavaratra Primary Schools, located in Antananarivo, underwent a complete renovation thanks to a collaboration between Ravinala Airports and TotalEnergies.

This initiative is part of the two groups’ CSR commitments aimed at improving school infrastructure and promoting plastic waste recycling. For two months, each school underwent major renovations. For the Ivato Base Primary School, an old colonial-era building, unused for two years, was given a new lease of life. The roof was redone, the doors and windows replaced, the walls repainted, and two new blackboards installed. This renovation increases capacity by an additional 80 students for the next school year.

At the Andafiavaratra EPP, a dilapidated room was transformed into an administrative office, while another room was converted to house a preschool section. The renovation of a well and the installation of a submersible pump now improves access to water. The floors were paved, ventilation was reinforced with screens, and the old doors and windows were replaced with materials salvaged from the old Ivato airport terminal.

The sustainable school furniture provided to both schools is made from recycled plastic collected since August 2023 by Ravinala Airports in partnership with Sofitrans, and by TotalEnergies since May 2024. More than 4.5 tons of plastic waste were recovered and transformed by Andao Company into durable tables, benches, chairs, and shelves, guaranteed for more than 10 years.

The production of the tables and benches requires approximately 25 kg of recycled plastic per unit. At the EPP Ivato Base, 25 tables and benches were distributed, while in Andafiavaratra, a preschool furniture kit was installed, benefiting several hundred students.
