Mauritian schools on the road digital transformation
The desire to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) in primary and secondary schools, as well as in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and special needs educational institutions (SEN), was expressed by the Mauritian Minister of Education, Dr. Mahend Gungapersad.**
This request was made during a meeting on June 12, 2025, at the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development in Phoenix. The Minister received a delegation from the Republic of Slovenia, led by Adrijana Hodak, Director of the Intercompany Training Centre at the Nova Gorica School. Mahend Gungapersad emphasized the importance of AI in modernizing the Mauritian education system and preparing students for the technological challenges of tomorrow. The latter requested assistance to introduce AI into school curricula, but also to train local teachers and trainers, particularly those from the Mauritius Institute of Education.
In his speech, Dr. Gungapersad praised the work carried out by the Slovenian delegation and acknowledged that Slovenia has good practices from which Mauritius can draw inspiration. The Minister also indicated that an official visit by a Mauritian delegation to the Slovenian Ministry of Education is planned. This visit could lead to the signing of agreements to strengthen cooperation and recruit Slovenian experts in Artificial Intelligence.
