UN 80th anniversary: Andry Rajoelina leads the Malagasy delegation

Madagascar alongside Member States for peace and development

Madagascar is taking part in the 80ᵉ United Nations General Assembly, which will be held from September 22 to 27, 2025 in New York. President Andry Rajoelina is leading the Malagasy delegation and will speak during the general debate scheduled for September 23.

The day before the opening of the summit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rasata Rafaravavitafika, attended the ceremony marking the 80ᵉ anniversary of the UN. This event brings together Member States around the values of peace, security, sustainable development and respect for human rights.

The President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, recalled in her inaugural speech that the Organization remains, despite its challenges, a symbol of common hope and collective commitment. The latter urged the nations to show courage and solidarity in a spirit of cooperation.

In this context, Madagascar reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism and universal principles. The Malagasy delegation defends the need for a more just, peaceful and solidarity-based future for all according to the MFA press release.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, on September 22, the delegation also participated in a dialogue on krill fishing organized by the collective The Antarctica Avengers at Goals House. Researchers and representatives of the communities of the Southern Ocean exchanged on the importance of this small crustacean for the marine ecosystem. Krill is the main food for whales that migrate and reproduce in the Indian Ocean.

Faced with the risk of excessive exploitation, the Big Island pleads for strict regulation of fishing. The country insists on the preservation of marine biodiversity in order to guarantee the survival of whales and to allow future generations to observe them.
