EUR 350 million to support the Comoros
Since the archipelago’s independence, the European Union (EU) and France have provided financial support of approximately 350 million EUR to the Comoros, announced Roland Kobia, EU Ambassador to Madagascar.
This amount does not include other regional funding. Visiting the Comoros to celebrate 50 years of independence, the Diplomat was accompanied by Pavlos Evangelidis, Head of the EU Office there. These officials presented several important projects, such as the Green and Blue Deal, the Global Gateway Strategy, trade relations, and fisheries agreements. One of the major projects is the expansion of the port of Moroni. This project is part of the Global Gateway Strategy, which aims to improve transport, energy, and digital infrastructure.
According to Pavlos Evangelidis, the investment will be several tens of millions of euros. This new port will contribute to the economic development of the islands through maritime activities. Another important project is the drinking water supply to Domoni, on the island of Ndzuani. Despite some technical delays, the inauguration is scheduled before the end of the year, with the presence of the Comorian President.
During his stay, the Ambassador met with several political and local officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Education, the Governor of Ngazidja, and the Mayors of Moroni and Mitsamihuli. Roland Kobia also met with members of the private sector and civil society.
