Madagascar – Slovenia: a new era of cooperation

Symbolic Planting concrete Commitment in Iavoloha

As part of her two-day state visit to Madagascar, the President of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, was welcomed on June 3, 2025, at the Iavoloha Palace by President Andry Rajoelina.

This is the first time that a Slovenian head of state has made an official visit to the Great Island. This meeting marks an important milestone in relations between the two countries. The two presidents expressed their desire to strengthen their cooperation. A memorandum of understanding was signed to establish regular political consultations. This will allow the two countries to exchange views on issues such as the economy, the environment, and international relations. Slovenia will support Madagascar’s candidacy for UNESCO membership, while Madagascar will support Slovenia’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council.

President Andry Rajoelina emphasized that this cooperation must focus on priority areas: agriculture, energy, health, education, the environment, and human development. He also highlighted the importance of supporting women and family planning to combat poverty. Nataša Pirc Musar recalled that Slovenia is already involved in Madagascar through Caritas Slovenia, a humanitarian organization active in the areas of health, drinking water, and education. She also welcomed the presence of Father Pedro, founder of Akamasoa, who is of Slovenian origin. To mark this visit, the two heads of state planted a rosewood tree in the garden of Iavoloha Palace, a symbol of the strength and durability of the friendship between the two countries.
