China hands over 16 Hongqi cars to Madagascar

SADC Summit: The Big Island Prepares with China’s Support

China officially handed over 16 Hongqi H9 2.0T vehicles to Madagascar on July 16, 2025, at the Iavoloha State Palace.

These vehicles will be used to transport the Heads of State attending the 45th SADC Summit, scheduled for August 3-18, 2025, in the Malagasy capital. The total value of these vehicles is estimated at USD 572,800. “This gesture reflects the good cooperation between the two countries and demonstrates China’s support in organizing this major regional event,” said President Andry Rajoelina during the ceremony.

The Hongqi brand, often used by senior Chinese leaders, symbolizes prestige and quality. “To ensure their proper functioning, Chinese technicians will train Malagasy technicians in the maintenance of these vehicles. This transfer of skills strengthens local capacities while ensuring optimal use of the donation,” he added.

This summit represents a significant moment for Madagascar. Rajoelina will officially assume the rotating presidency of SADC, succeeding his Zimbabwean counterpart. The handover ceremony will take place during the event, marking the beginning of his term at the helm of the regional organization. The Council of Ministers recently approved the outlines of the summit preparations. An organizing committee has been established, and work is gradually progressing within the various committees.
