Solar and technological support to secure Malagasy waters
An autonomous 12 kilowatt solar system was inaugurated on August 11, 2025 at the Fisheries Surveillance Center, in Ampandrianomby, Antananarivo. This inauguration also marked the delivery of communication equipment for the surveillance vessel “TELONIFY”.
During his speech, Edgard Razafindravahy, Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) announced that this installation is more than just a technical advance. “This solar system and this equipment show the desire of Madagascar and neighboring countries to better protect the resources of the sea and to fight against illegal fishing” he declared.
This project was made possible thanks to the Regional Fisheries Monitoring Plan (PRSP) and the ECOFISH program, funded by the European Union. The solar system guarantees continuous power supply for satellite tracking of fishing boats, avoiding any interruption. The total cost of this installation is 19,600 EUR.
The “TELONIFY” boat also received modern communications equipment, such as a satellite telephone and antennas, for an amount of 49,150 euros. This equipment allows for better coordination during sea patrols and ensures the safety of the crew. The Minister of Fisheries and the Blue Economy Mahatanté Paubert recalled that the fight against illegal fishing is a global challenge. “Madagascar cannot do this alone. Thanks to this cooperation, we have already arrested several foreign boats fishing illegally in our waters*,” he explained.
