Mauritius-Japan: A Partnership Serving the Marine Environment
On Monday, May 19, the Albion Fisheries Research Centre in Mauritius inaugurated a newly renovated exhibition center.
This project was supported by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The objective is to help better protect the coastal areas and marine life around the island.
The exhibition center presents extensive information on the country’s marine biodiversity. Visitors can discover mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reproduction. The public also learns which coral species are endangered or threatened.
Japanese Ambassador to Mauritius Masahiro Kan explained that his country has long worked with Mauritius to improve infrastructure and protect the marine environment. “This center is an important tool to raise awareness among young people and the general public about nature conservation,” he said.
The diplomat added that environmental education is essential for future generations to understand why the oceans must be cared for. Both countries want to continue working together to ensure that economic development is carried out while respecting nature.
